I'm Glad I Asked - An Airman’s Story 1939-45

This is a story of a young Airman’s experiences during the Second World War. From the declaration of War in 1939 this account covers call up, training and engaging in warfare right up to the end of the war in 1945.

Basic training took place in the UK and for more technical training it meant travelling abroad. This consisted of a sea voyage aboard the Queen Mary to New York and then by train through the USA to Canada. In Canada servicemen could learn and practise to become pilots, navigators, gunners and bomb aimers without the hindrance of enemy intervention. Many servicemen would have had similar experiences but this is a simple narrative of how it was for one individual in the RAF during the war years.
