Show 1 & 2 - The St Lawrence River, New York State, USA |
|
For the first two shows we travelled to the mighty St Lawrence Seaway in up state New York. The river here forms the border between USA and Canada and the easiest flight is into Ottowa or Montreal and then you drive back into the States over a very impressive bridge. It takes about an hour.
Our visit was in June 2006 and organised by Angling International. We fished the river for a total of 3 days around the Massena and Waddington regions where it is literally loaded with carp, and whilst we have a fair amount of experience on the river a guide is always a good idea to keep you in touch with where the carp are likely to be as hotspots vary according to the seasons. You can use two rods on a national permit and fish virtually anywhere along the river including nights if you want to, but we chose to stay at the Riverview Lodge in Waddington and they looked after us royally. In addition to accommodation they offer tackle hire and a guiding service should you need it.
The St Lawrence is particularly suited to anglers that like a lot of action with fish in the 18 to 35lb range being the average size. Some 40s are present but are hard to catch because of the sheer number of smaller fish. This is the perfect trip to take a wife / girlfriend along as there is no language barrier, the fishing is fast and easy so you don’t need to spend hours at it, and you stay in hotels rather than on the bank.

Shows 3 & 4 - Lake Ontario, Oswego, New York, USA |
|
Shows 3 and 4 were filmed at the massive Lake Ontario, one of the great lakes of North America which measures an incredible 193 miles long and 53 miles wide. There is plenty of accommodation along the shores, but specialist carp tackle and guiding is not available unless booked through an individual trip with our hosts Angling International. The sport can be amazing once the fish have been located, and whilst it will appeal to the adventurous carp angler, the Oswego area is perfect for guys that want to take their wives / girlfriends with them as there are plenty of attractions, bars restaurants, and shopping to do plus the scenery and sport is breathtaking.
As with anywhere in New York State you can fish almost anywhere on a national licence which allows you to use two rods. We found that you didn’t need them on the Lake as, once found, the fishing was incredibly easy. In fact we drove sailed and flew around for a couple of days then spent just a day and a half fishing catching in excess of 40 carp once we had found them.

Show 5 - Elphicks Lake, Kent, UK |
|
Fishing with The Trickster took us to Elphicks in Kent, a commercial water in the UK that is without question one of the most prolific day ticket waters around. It is one of the favourite rounds of the British Carp Angling Championships and attracts some high profile anglers to it’s banks because of the quality of fishing that it offers.
We chose The North Lake as it houses a large head of carp to over 40lbs but also has a surprise or two in the form of some big catfish as Rob found out. Our trip lasted two nights in October 06 and using standard tactics we caught in 27 carp to mid 20s and a catfish of 40lbs in the time that we were there. You can fish Elphicks on a day ticket but booking is recommended for North Lake as it is very popular.

Show 6 - Todber Manor Fisheries, Dorset, UK |
|
When an invite came through to fish a new lake that had not seen any pressure before we couldn't resist. To fit in with the Extreme banner the weather was shocking with cold winds and heavy rains but the carp still fed and we ended up landing a lake record not once but twice in the two days we were there.
Venture Tackle's brand manager Graham Slaughter joined us and bagged up with some skilful use of the bait boat, and we left Todber very happy chappies. Situated in Dorset, Todber Manor is a cracking carp fishery with plenty of chances for action and a brilliant cottage complex whioch means you can take the family on holiday as well. It was so good we immediately enlisted it to the British Carp Angling Championships eliminator list so keep an eye out for it's name. We're sure you're going to hear much more about it.
